Our first meeting is October 1st at 2:15 pm in the library. We will disseminate general information, pass out the booklists and describe some of our upcoming activities for the 2nd quarter.
So what exactly is 'Battle of the Books' and why are we starting it in our schools? Battle of the Books is a national reading competition that encourages independent reading among children of all ages. Children read 8-10 books (depending on the grade level) throughout the school year. The Battle of the Books club at Hauula will hold monthly meetings to review books, encourage the reading and do book-centered activities. Then in February, there will be a school wide competition to determine the teams that will represent Hauula Elementary at the Ko'olauloa competition to be held at the Kahuku Public Library in March.

Hauula Elementary does not currently have all the books, but our parent committee is working on getting copies at the school. At least five copies of every book can currently be found at the Kahuku public library and there are many available copies on the electronic app for Hawaii's State Public Library. Since many of the books are widely published and generally popular children's novels, they are easily found at many second hand stores and for $0.01 (plus $3.99 shipping) on Amazon and other book sites.
