Reading Schedule

The dates of our monthly meetings is still being determined with teacher and volunteer schedules,  However, we do know what books we will be discussing in each month so the keiki can try to start matching their reading of at least a few of the books to what will be worked on.

Please note: Keiki to NOT need to complete all books to attend the discussion and activity.  They will still learn and start to internalize the stories, characters and concepts if they come to the activities.  These are just general guidelines to help them be able to pace themselves and finish all books before the end of February.

Activity this Thursday

Come join us to decorate and prep our Battle of the Books notebooks on Thursday, October 29th!  These will help you keep track of your reading and notes to remember what characters and plots belong to which books.  Bring a 1/2" or bigger three ring binder and page dividers (optional).  We will meet in the library directly after school from 1:15-2pm.  See you there!

Ways to Help

Many parents have asked how they can help with Battle of the Books.  There are several ways.  If you are interested you can email me at faustinofamily@gmail.com or contact me at our activity on Thursday, October 29th right after school.

1) We are looking for coaches for each level.  Coaches meet with their grade level just once a month and help discuss the books that are on the schedule, encourage them to keep reading, let them check off their books and then quiz them on some sample questions they might have.  This meeting will take 30-45 minutes and take place directly after school.  The 1 /2 grade team will be especially easy to read the books and prep small activities for them to remember the characters and details.  I will coach whatever team is left after we get volunteers.

I know it is a big commitment to do every month or take on a whole team.  If you would like to help but can’t make the whole commitment to do every month, you can volunteer to do just one month for one grade level.  If you are interested in doing this, just let me know what month and what grade level you would be able to do and I will give you the books and details.

2) Come help us with our notebook decorating and stuffing activity from 1:15-2pm this Thursday, October 29th.

      3) Volunteer to help proctor the school or district competition in February and March.  We need judges, time keepers etc. in February and March

4) Volunteer to make certificates or completion or help us come up with a small reward system for finishing books.

       5) Donate books to our library!  This is one of the easiest ways to help.  You can find many books at second hand stores for very cheap.  On Amazon several partner book sellers have used copies that sell for as little as $0.01 with $3.99 shipping. I’ve relisted our books here so you can see what we are missing or need more copies of.

Welcome to our Battle of the Books blog!  We'll keep information and activities up to date on the blog and the Hauula Elementary facebook page.

Our first meeting is October 1st at 2:15 pm in the library.  We will disseminate general information, pass out the booklists and describe some of our upcoming activities for  the 2nd quarter.

So what exactly is 'Battle of the Books' and why are we starting it in our schools?  Battle of the Books is a national reading competition that encourages independent reading among children of all ages.  Children read 8-10 books (depending on the grade level) throughout the school year.  The Battle of the Books club at Hauula will hold monthly meetings to review books, encourage the reading and do book-centered activities.  Then in February, there will be a school wide competition to determine the teams that will represent Hauula Elementary at the Ko'olauloa competition to be held at the Kahuku Public Library in March.

The books lists for this year are as follows:

1st – 2nd grade books
This is not my hat – Jon Klassen
A sick day for Amos McGee – Erin E. Stead

Hauula Elementary does not currently have all the books, but our parent committee is working on getting copies at the school.  At least five copies of every book can currently be found at the Kahuku public library and there are many available copies on the electronic app for Hawaii's State Public Library.  Since many of the books are widely published and generally popular children's novels, they are easily found at many second hand stores and for $0.01 (plus $3.99 shipping) on Amazon and other book sites.
